The three ways a soft bag fails on a San Diego boat
Soft bags are not badly made. They fail because of what they are made of, and they fail in the same three places every time.
Odor, then mold
Squid juice, tuna blood and salt spray land on fabric and foam on day one and soak in. Padding does not fully dry in a garage. Two weeks after the trip the bag smells like a bait tank and there is mold in the seams. You cannot hose out a sponge.
It cannot hold the loadout
A 1.5 to 3 day trip is big gear in volume: surface irons, 8.8 oz (250g) flat-falls, knife jigs, 40 and 60 and 80lb fluoro filler spools, hook boxes, crimps, sinkers. Soft sides collapse, trays crack under a boot or a cooler, and half the arsenal stays in the truck.
It dies in a season
Zippers seize with salt corrosion. Stitching blows out under lead and tungsten. Soaked fabric stretches and never comes back. Most anglers just buy another bag every year and treat that as normal. It is not.
What a hard box actually changes on deck
A rigid shell fixes those three failures in one move, because there is nothing porous for the mess to live in and nothing stitched to blow out.
- Cleanup becomes a 30-second job. Hose it on the dock, drain it, leave it open overnight, and it is dry by morning.
- Your gear keeps its shape. Irons lie flat, jigs stay where you put them, and nothing gets crushed when a cooler slides into it.
- The lid is rated to sit and stand on. On a packed charter boat there is never a seat. A hard box is storage and your spot on the rail.
- Hardware instead of zippers. Corrosion-resistant latches take saltwater exposure trip after trip, and open clean with wet hands at 2am.
- Rod holders that ride with you. Clip-on holders on the side rail park a rigged rod upright while you re-tie or swap jigs, instead of leaning it on the rail.
Does a hard box hold a real San Diego loadout?

The blood test
The cleanup claim is the one worth testing, so I tested it where it counts. I ran this box on a July 2026 San Diego tuna trip and put the worst of the day on it. Tuna blood, the stuff that stains and stinks up a soft bag for weeks, comes off the shell with water and one wipe. Nothing porous, nothing to soak it up, dry by morning.

Sitting on it, and rods on it
Two things a soft bag cannot do at all. I sat on this box between stops for a whole trip and the lid did not flex, which on a boat with no open seat is worth as much as the storage.
And the rod holders clip straight onto the side rail, so a rigged rod stands upright on your own gear while you get sorted.

Where a hard box is honest about its limits
A hard box is not automatically better at everything. It is heavier and bulkier than a bag, it does not sling over your shoulder, and if you only fish half-days for calicos it is more box than the trip needs.
And on the 30QT specifically: it is a water resistant deck box, not a dive housing. There is no rubber lid liner, and that is deliberate. A box that drains and dries beats a box that traps a cup of salt water inside for three days. That trapped water is exactly how soft bags end up smelling like last August. Do not throw it overboard.
