I'm Hao. Hao2Fish is my YouTube channel and my store, and it's just me running both.

The name is a play on "how to fish," which is the whole point of it.

My dad handed me a rod when I was six

I grew up fishing in Canada. My father took me out and that was it, I was hooked. Smallmouth bass and pike, and I went every chance I got. After school. Out on the ice in winter. Standing on a bank in early spring when the water was still cold enough to hurt.

That never really stopped. I live in the Bay Area now and I fish salmon, halibut, stripers, and rockfish, mostly out of a kayak. I've filmed the whole journey on YouTube: youtube.com/@hao2fish

In 2024 I went to San Diego for the first time and fished tuna and yellowtail. That trip rearranged things for me. Deep jigging for bluefin is a different sport, and I got hooked all over again the same way I did at six years old.

I started making tuna jigs and people loved them

I started making my own jigs because I wanted a specific thing I couldn't buy.

The first ones were tungsten. Small profile, dense, dropping straight down through current instead of scoping out sideways. They worked. They sold out. People caught 100 lb+ tuna on them.

Then the price of tungsten went up, and it went up a lot. I could have passed that cost on to you. I didn't want to, because the whole reason I'm doing this is to make tuna fishing accessible to more people, and a jig that costs as much as the boat ticket does the opposite.

So I pivoted to lead. That sounds simple and it was not. Tungsten is almost twice as dense as lead, so to get a lead jig anywhere near that tungsten profile, small and dropping fast, I had to solve it with shape instead of material. A torpedo body that slices through the water column and drops straight into the bite zone instead of drifting sideways. Squid shaped, because that's what bluefin are eating at depth, not a sardine.

It took a while. It worked. The lead jigs fished well through summer 2026, and that's the line I'm building on now.

Where this goes

I'll keep expanding the gear, and I'll keep teaching and learning too. That second half matters as much to me as the first. Hao2Fish, how to fish. Every week I send out a fishing report: where the salmon are, what the striper bite looks like at Mussel Rock, whether the squid have shown up at Monterey. It's built from my own trips and from friends who fish these spots, and it's free.

I've posted almost 600 videos. If I go out and catch nothing, that one goes up too.

I'm a paying angler like you. I buy the boat tickets, I lose jigs on the bottom, I come home empty some weekends. The only difference is I film it and I make the gear I wished I could buy.
